Introduction

 SESSION DETAILS:  

The 2016 AEBPLI program will focus on topics that help librarians support Evidence Based Practice (EBP) within their institutions. In addition to support with teaching the steps in the EBP process, it will also include support for the development of systematic reviews. As with previous Institutes, the program will be presented by health sciences librarians from Australia and the United States. Content will be presented in engaging large group lectures followed by time to practice within small group sessions. It will be a four day program for librarians to work together in a relaxed and supportive environment. The 2016 program will cover the following: PICO and study design; Medline/PubMed expert searching; peer review of searches; the role of the librarian in systematic reviews; filters and text mining; grey literature; critical appraisal of therapy studies; overview of qualitative studies; critical appraisal of systematic reviews; and interpreting Forest plots.

During the four days you will have the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to support evidence-based practice and activities within your institutions.

COST: Total cost is $1,400 ($1,272.73 + GST $127.27)

VENUE AND ACCOMMODATION:

The Institute will be held at Flinders at Victoria Square, 182 Victoria Square, Adelaide, South Australia.
Accommodation will be at Hotel Grand Chancellor Adelaide on Currie.
The distance between the teaching venue and accommodation is 450m. This is an easy walk, or participants can take a free tram trip between the two locations.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Learning Objectives:

 After participating in the EBP workshop, you should be able to:

1.    Identify and explain the steps in evidence based practice (EBP)

2.    Recognize the basic study designs in clinical medicine and their strengths and weaknesses

3.    Formulate a focused clinical question and identify appropriate resources to efficiently answer clinical questions

4.    Identify and explain the basic criteria for assessing the risk of bias for randomized controlled clinical trials, qualitative research, and systematic reviews.

5.    Identify roles and resources for librarians in supporting the development of systematic reviews for publication

6.    Understand the components of an exhaustive search strategy for systematic reviews and the tools for developing detailed search strategies

This course is eligible for points in the ALIA health specialist certification Professional Development Scheme and meets the requirements of the Competency Area: Understand scientific research methods and have the ability to critically examine and filter research literature from many related disciplines.  This course is also eligible for 20 CE hours from the Medical Library Association.
